Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO) offers an example of a company that is using a systems approach to conservation, food production, and poverty alleviation.  COMACO rewards people in Luangwe Valley, Zambia for conserving their natural resources. COMACO works with 179,000 farmers who have pledged to abide by a set of community-decided principles designed to safeguard the health of their soils, forests, and wildlife. COMACO provides extensive trainings, support, and market access to secure a substantial, reliable income through farming. COMACO uses an innovative financial structure that includes grants, carbon payments, product sales, and operating loans (using carbon payments as collateral to reduce interest rates).
